Intrada Soundtrack Forum

Hi all,
I see from Wikipedia that Intrada has been doing it's thing since '85...
I'm not sure how to ask this without sounding offensive, but I'll put it out there anyway:
How does the quality of Intrada's releases from the 80's compare to their most recent material? Again, this sounds very rude so I apologize but I would think that as Intrada became more and more popular, their work quality would increase. Therefore, although subjective, might some consider their older releases to be a bit "inferior" compared to their latest. Can someone chime in with their opinion on this?
For example, I see that Intrada has already released some scores years ago that people around here have been wishing for a re-release of. Why is this? Were the originals not "complete" enough? Might they need remastering? ... and so on.
(please don't hurt me)

I think it is mostly about availability. There are many older, now out-of-print releases that newer generations of listeners want to get. Varese is starting their "Encore" series next week that addresses this very problem with some of their older and currently unavailable products.

Mastering and editing technologies have improved over the years, so in some cases quality improvements are to be expected from a seasoned album producer. Better sources might become available in some rare cases. Content expansion is also a plus whenever it applies.

In my opinion, Intrada's more recent release of Goldsmith's underrated score for Rent-a-Cop is a perfect example of when both expansion and quality improvements were much appreciated.

Intrada did what it could, like any label then, with what technology and methods were avaiable. There's nothing lacking in the quality in that regard, unless you watch "Ghostbusters" and think the FX quality lacks in comparrison to a film today. Or you could realize it's not bad, works well, and enjoy it.

Also, AFM re-use fees have changed, and contacts in studios have evolved and found anew. Intrada can now do what it could not previously.


Intrada can re-release as many titles as they want, as long as there is a market for it (and the rights holder's cooperate). Remember: not everybody has a chance to buy something. Either they don't have the money and it sells out during that period, they are unemployed, in war, dealing with health/family issues (as I've seen before) that force them to drop out of the loop, just recently discovered scores, just recently found out about Intrada and other labels, future score fans, etc.
