ST:TMP is one of my favorite Goldsmith scores, along with Supergirl and Twilight's Last Gleaming.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture is hands-down the best Star Trek score. It has that immortal main theme (which has since eclipsed Courage's as the "real" Star trek theme) and shows Jerry Goldsmith at his most inventive. Star Trek: TMP is right up there with Planet of the Apes for its bold experimentation and inventive use of instrumentation. If all this weren't enough you also have one of Goldsmith's most romantic and beautiful creations, "Ilya's Theme" (which provides a warm counterweight to the heroic main theme and "otherwordly" cues). ST - TMP definitely. The one scene where Scotty is shuttling Kirk out to the new Enterprise is one of Goldsmith's finest moments in cinema. Be sure to check out Kunzel's take on this at some point. I think it's on the Telarc STAR TRACKS II CD. Just really impressive sound (but not as good overal performance). Still, it will move your woofers. |
