Wow! All three are absolute must buys. I was just whining to myself about a week ago about how I missed Intrada's release of Fielding's masterful score for The Mechanic. I won't be missing it this time. 70 minutes of Speed, one of the most exciting modern scores, is a most welcome expansion on the current 40-minute album. The LLL release even goes the extra mile and includes the end credits Billy Idol song. Nice surprises all-around. THE MECHANIC: LIMITED EDITION LLLCD 1191 Music by Jerry Fielding Limited Edition of 1200 Units La-La Land Records presents composer Jerry Fielding’s (STRAW DOGS, THE ENFORCER, THE GAUNTLET, SEMI-TOUGH) classic original action score to the legendary 1972 MGM action-thriller THE MECHANIC, starring Charles Bronson and Jan-Michael Vincent and directed by Michael Winner. An atmospheric marvel of sonic textures and experimental approaches, Fielding’s chilling score truly is the stone-cold-heart of this classic hitman/apprentice tale. Aside from perfectly capturing action and suspense, Fielding’s score gives the film a depth and resonance beyond its celluloid. Aside from some audio enhancements, a slightly different track order and new packaging and liner notes, the audio content is the same as the Intrada release, so this re-issue is geared for fans who do not currently own that previous release. Produced by Ford A. Thaxton and mastered by James Nelson, this release features in-depth, exclusive liner notes by film music writer Randall D. Larson. This is a limited edition of 1200 units. Disc One features acclaimed composer Christopher Young’s (HELLRAISER, RUNAWAY JURY, THE CORE, DRAG ME TO HELL) original score – considered to be the composer’s breakthrough work in terms of scoring films for major studios. For this release, Young has re-visited his career-making score and has provided a new, magnificent 48 minute assembly – creating the ultimate presentation of his haunting and beautiful work, a melodic and atmospheric score that injects the film with suspense and human emotion. Disc Two presents renowned composer Maurice Jarre’s (LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, THE PROFESSIONALS, GHOST, A WALK IN THE CLOUDS) unused original score to the same film. Jarre scored about 75% of the film before his music was replaced with Young’s score. About 40 minutes of Jarre’s score is presented here and fans will be delighted to finally have this previously unreleased work, which is in the vein of his music for WITNESS and GHOST. In total, this release is a fascinating look at two different scoring approaches by two immensely talented composers. Produced by Dan Goldwasser and mastered by Mike Matessino, this limited edition release of 2000 Units includes in-depth, exclusive liner notes by film music writer Jeff Bond. I was just revisiting the Milan release of Speed. I had forgotten about just how good the sound quality is. Thirty extra minutes and a chronological presentation will do wonders for this score as an album experience. The score contains great musical themes (and variations of them) along with some highly effective emotional moments, all in crystal clear and dynamic audio. |

VERY VERY excited about Jen 8, one of my favorite Young's and have been dying to hear the Jarre since the 'tease' in the Univ. FR box set. Two of my top 5 all time composers in one set!?!?!? Aye yah!!! Excited about SPEED too, but hope the extra 30 mins. aren't just more 'elevator music' - have to rewatch that one. Will be interesting to have the film order sequence, Mancina put all the 'money cues' up front. Glad THE MECHANIC is back in print, awesome primer for Fielding-curious - and hey, get this, the movie is excellent, so get the record and rent the film! What a winning combination!!!! ![]() |

Listening to the samples for Speed, it seems that the previously unreleased "Runaway Train" track contains the soft variation of the main theme that has stuck with me for years. I think it plays when Jack tries to get Annie out of the handcuffs. The passage may be brief, but I just love how it sounds. I look forward to listening to the entire disc. |

Excellent sound quality for Mancina's score, and the notes were nicely written. It was particularly interesting to see that the album master was used for the previously released cues, which makes sense since the original album does sound perfect. One slight criticism is that unlike with the end credits song for LLL's Commando release, the volume for the end credits song on this album wasn't normalized well with Mancina's score. This makes its loudness too jarring once the score comes to a close. It is important to take this into consideration when you have a score with good dynamic range and a song like Idol's "Speed" that is limited in dynamic range by design. This is obviously only a minor inconvenience since an easy volume control change remedies it. Anyway, good stuff and look forward to listening to The Mechanic and Jennifer 8. |
