Post subject:  Listening to music during the day

After decades of listening to film music, I noticed interesting patterns to my listening choices as the day goes on. In the morning, I tend to prefer Golden age scores -- Korngold, Steiner, Tiomkin, Rozsa...bring it on. In the afternoon, anything from the 70s onward will do...it's open season. Early twilight -- nothing, I don't seem to like to listen to music then. Later twilight, as the sky turns colors and sun says its farewell, I tend to prefer more atmospheric scores or ones with lots of color. "The Cloud" from Star Trek TMP is a a great example. This is my favorite time to listen. As evening grows, I tend to move to softer music....John Barry, Georges Delerue, Williams' Sabrina, for example, or something jazzy or more contemporary.

My habits don't follow the time of day as much as the day of the week. Monday starts off somewhat melancholy (Jarre's JACOB'S LADDER is a big favorite) with something more rousing by Wednesday (CAPRICORN ONE!) and Friday is pretty darn joyous, á la RAIDERS. The weekend is a free for all, but I am partial to either Bach or Arvo Pärt when Sunday morning rolls around.

My best hours to listen to score is between 11 PM to about 5 AM. As I prefer to work in the late night to early morning hours, when it's most quite and without the usual daily distractions, I can just put on some tunes and have, pretty much, long periods without anything disturbing my listening time. Also, and keep in tow with Roger's observations of his own music habits, I too have noticed that musical tastes has changed a bit over time. I still love and enjoy the stuff that I did when I got into film music some 36 years ago, but my appreciation has grown a lot over the last 10 years or so, and I now enjoy a lot more music than I use to and in a lot of different styles, as well.

After so many years listening to music it's very refreshing to still be able to hear music with a fresh set of ears and, also, to still be able to discover something that is profound about it.

I've never been one to listen to music during the day. The daytime was usually reserved for nonsense listening of some obscure screwball LP, ever hear of Intimacy on the RKO Unique label or the LP featuring the cast of The Beverly Hillbillies singing a batch of songs only a shithead could fully appreciate? The early evening was always the time for playing a couple of recordings and I always based my choice on whatever mood I was experiencing at any given time. I never listened to something in order to counteract my mood only to enhance it. If I were in a sinister, dark mood, I might play In Cold Blood or Jack The Ripper. A happier mood might influence me to listen to some upbeat Ennio Morricone score or some comedy score. In a fightin' mood I might listen to Robert Russell Bennett's, "Armed Forces Suite" played REAL LOUD... And this was back in the day before the AM radio right wing trash used patriotism as a facade. So basically I was considered the screwball next door by the shitkickers in Ohio, especially when I played my Revolutionary Ensemble LP or cued up something from my free jazz collection.
