Post subject:  About titles going OOP from Intrada

As of late some titles that hasn´t been out more than a year is going OOP from Intrada and I wonder if that is a new deal Intrada have done to the studios because of being allowed to release a number that is not strictly limited, and more in the name of demand?
Gator for example is going OOP 31/1 and it has been out 1½ year. Is this because Intrada will loose their licence for this at this point, and if so, does this only concerns titles from certain studios?
Youngguns 2 sold out but not before it got a duedate a month/two months after its release.
I´m just curious if this is a deal intrada have done or if it is only to make space for new titles being released
(There must be older titles on the shelves for this?)
This is something I in my curiosity have been thinking of and i know LLLR has had this kind of deal for a long time, but haven´t seen intrada having it before they announced Youngguns 2.

It would be great if Doug or Roger would share some input of this 8)

*Have this been discussed somewhere else, i apologize for starting this*

The way I understand it, the guys decided to not have titles hanging around on their shelves that nobody is interested in. The idea is that they'll keep stuff in print as long as there seems to be demand, when possible, so that everyone who keeps a casual eye on the announcements can have a shot but they're not gonna sit on two thousand copies of something that isn't moving either. The trade off for not having to sit up all night waiting for the announcement for fear something will sell out in two hours is that you can't dally for years and expect it to still be available. Makes sense to me.

We've tried to explain this but it doesn't seem to have caught on yet with everyone. In a nutshell:

We're simply moving the pressure people feel to purchase limited edition CDs the moment they're announced from the front end to the back end. That way you can actually prioritize purchasing without the panic... at least to to a degree. If the interest dies down, we'll try to put a termination date up so people know we're planning on deleting the title. And if it goes the other way, like an EXPLORERS or something, where instantly there's a big rush, we'll keep quantities coming until we either hit the AFM maximum that we've negotiated or, again, until the interest dies down. So everything (except our regular MAF series) technically still remains limited, both by the AFM requirements and by your own interest. You just have a little more time now to get the stuff.

We simply got tired of the sell outs where titles were literally a "now you see it now you don't" shell game or whatever. Gads. What an unfriendly way to help customers get the music they want. We're letting YOU now have some say in the duration of a particular CD's shelf life while still maintaining an economically viable business model.

We realize, as a label, we've gone down our own road on this whole 'limited edition' thing - which we literally helped launch over 26 years ago - but we do sometimes like to do our own thing. Following everyone else just isn't our strong suit. And seeing releases sell out in a matter of hours just isn't so attractive anymore. Watching people fight over the spoils? Zero fun. I don't know if I'd call us being leaders or anything like that but we are forging new territory. And the AFM likes the approach. It's pretty open and honest to everyone involved. It lets people who enjoy the music get a decent chance at the CDs and it lets people who enjoy collecting and investing and trading in limited editions still have their day!

To me this just seems like the friendliest way of helping our customers get their CDs.

Sounds Fair Game to me

Beats playing roulette with something we all love.

Now we can all be winners

Thanks Doug :D

Does it go the same for Disney Records titles ? I mean, first Up was announced as a maximum 10 000 units edition (as long as the demand lasts), then The Black Hole was clearly presented as an unlimited edition (the MAF way ?)...
I'm writing a Toy Story 3 CD review for a Disney webzine. The audience is mainly Disney items collectors, and they like to know if it is a limited edition or not, for collection purposes. What should I say to them ?

Just some thoughts, but...

There are three major labels releasing regularly (LLLR, Intrada, Kritzerland), other releasing semi regularly (like Quartet and Movie Score Meida), and about half a dozen other labels (Prometheus, Music Box Records, etc.), and then REGULAR releases from Varese (not counting the once every three or four months club titles), Silva, others.

Meanwhile, a person only has so much disposable income.

FSM delt with this by having sales. And we can't compare the two if it worked fully to get people to buy, since FSM's stuck around until gone, while Intrada simply stops selling.

My initial impression is that Intrada changed their selling amounts so could get it instead of it selling out, if they wanted to have a copy. But now that if it doesn't move as fast, it's simply put on the chopping block.
Seems to me it's tyhe same game as when you missed out, just altered some.

Couldn't Intrada, hypothetically, instead of STOPPING the sale of the remaining quantity, just reduce the price by half? Profit from not selling the remainder -- discontinuing, zero. Profit from selling at half price, half the original profit margin. Something would be better than nothing, I would feel.
Heck, reduce by half until about a hundred copies are remaining, then bring the price back up to normal, so more word of mouth on the title as spread from new owners, and the final hundred can yeild the full profit margin.

There would be no way for the average user to know when, or even if, a title would be reduced. It would be speculatory.

I should add that I wasn't criticizing the current model. It's just that I would love to buy some titles like Tobruk and The War Wagon for $10 if they aren't moving nearly as well as wished.

Or, they could be discounted when buying a select group of titles.

Post subject:  Re: About titles going OOP from Intrada

That's another idea; a discounted price if you purchase another title, maybe another one that isn't selling so well (which would not be divuldged to the buyer before hand). An initial thought, sure to have holes of problems.

I'd still like to know what happens to the bulk stock; does Intrada have to legally detroy it, or do they hang onto it and maybe offer up for sale on eBay (which there is nothing wrong with)/use for replacement discs/or even give away as freebies, etc.

I recall one time saying here, for example, that if it was the cost of housing and they couldn't house stock, I would take "Malone" and house the stock. If they stopped selling a David Newman title and still had bulk, being the creator and runner of the biggest Newman site, if I had the money, I'd buy as much of the bulk at a reduced price I could, and sell off via my site, that way people wouldn't miss out.

Just like I'm sure FSM member Basil would house the large, large, LARGE bulk of remaining "My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic" CD's for sale to take it off some label's hands.

I still think I have eye cancer from actually watching a second of those ponies...
