Thanks to a trade with somebody else, I now have "Star Trek IV". The score sounds a bit more warm and full. Personal tastes: Some mixing I felt didn't help the cues -- the instrument mixes on the original CD were near perfect. Also, sounds like some light reverb was added to parts of cues, since the same cues on the original CD don't distort my car speakers, but do on this one. I swear, my VHS copy of the film has the "(album ending)" version of "Chkov's Run". I've never heard the one used as the film score presentation -- just a quick question: did they change it for later DVD's? Did the staff double check the film, maybe this was an error? It was interesting hearing the alternates. Some of them unecessarily, if used, would have slowed the film down. I think Rosenman nailed the new re-writes, and certainly tightened the End Credits to perfection. And I love the fact that after all this time, I can finally hear those ominous lovely orchestrated two notes for the Challenger note before the film, leading to the opening titles, and no edit as on the old CD. I'm glad to hear, at least it sounded like it, the two pieces weren't cross-faded, and I'm equally gald the folks at Intrada seemed to agree that they should be as one cue. It occured to me: you know what would have been nice, maybe a few small minutes from the sessions of Rosenman, just ot hear him and how he worked, for prosperity. Having listened to the "Market Street" film version two or three times now, which is not on the CD (yes, I read the explination here from either Doug or Roger), it sounds to me like it's an edit of the existing piece, with some instruments mixed down or out, but not trictly that -- an edit; layed over it seems to be new recordings of instruments, including I think a re-performance of a small section. I'm guessing they played the small bits live and layed it over the edit. I'm not going to under take the edit of the European prologue yet -- I'll wait and see if somebody beats me to it, since I recall an FSM member saying they might do it. |
