what to add? Another one of the greatest composers is gone far too early.
He was 68 only. Really sad day...

This story certainly took me by surprise. He made some very important contributions.

I watched Bananas on HBO Comedy just this past Saturday morning.

Just yesterday I was thinking about his score for Sophie's Choice, an LP I've had for years and searched soundtrackcollector.com for info about the availability of a CD.

Our thoughts are with his friends, family and fans. Another fine composer is taken away far too early. Just yesterday I was thinking of his music for Little Nikita (that is not yet released). A first class score to a very under-rated movie. R.I.P.

Yes sad times indeed

A few weeks ago just watched The Sting for the very first time on Universal's 100th anniversary Blu-Ray.
Never heard his music before but was instantly hooked.

R.I.P Mr Hamlisch

I always thought it was Hamlisch who arranged the Joplin pieces.
Not too surprising it was actually Schuller though.

Now that I have located my LP of THE STING, Gunther Schuller is credited (not very prominently) with arranging six of the album's 10 Joplin cues. And George Roy Hill in his liner notes specified that he and Hamlisch decided jointly upon the Joplin rags to be used -- not Hill alone, as I had misstated in my initial post.

So I have corrected that statement above, and I apologize for my inaccuracy.

His Woody Allen scores are great. As for The Way We Were, I cringe at the thought of it. Can't stand mauldlin, overly sentimental music.

The Sting; Why was turn of the century Ragtime music was used to score a film set in the 1930's? I'm thinking Henry Mancini would have worked wonders with the film.

Thank you, Mr. Hamlisch,
from a James Bond film and music fan.

Hopefully it won't be too long, before we get a release of THE SPY WHO LOVED ME's original film tracks - my no.1 soundtrack Grail. 8)

'But when Hamlisch made a third trip to the stage that evening to collect the Best Adapted Score award for THE STING, he never mentioned or even referred to Joplin. As a Joplin admirer already, I felt immediately insulted; but a few minutes later I forgave Hamlisch, accepting that he had to be treading the clouds from sweeping all three of the music Oscars that night (which I think has never happened again.)"

Mr. Hamlisch indeed DID mention Scott Joplin in his Academy Award acceptance speech for Best Music, Scoring Original Song Score and/or Adaptation of "The Sting", his first award of the evening, by the way.

Does anyone else find the following quote as being rather bizzare:

"After winning three Academy Awards, four Grammy Awards, four Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, a Tony Award and a Pulitzer Prize, Marvin Hamlisch simply collapsed and fell to the floor dead."

From some website called(I think)"californiality"... something like that.
