A significant part of the 1993 Paramount film Indecent Proposal’s seductive charm is John Barry’s sad, sensual music. In one of this most heartfelt themes of the '90s, the main theme captures the story’s essential feelings and honors its highest aspirations. An elegant piano melody floats across a warm string bed, and the sensation is one of romance tinged with sadness and loss. Throughout the score, strings are like beds of silk and champagne, and the piano— melodic and arpeggiated—is liberally sprinkled over them like rose petals. Everything is warm and luscious, even when the mood is sad or uncertain. Heartbreak is woven into the sensuality. Straightforwardly tonal, the score's mood ranges from nostalgically beautiful to dark and dangerous to sad and sexy.

At the time of the film's release, the soundtrack album to Indecent Proposal emphasized the songs heard in the film, including the original song to which John Barry contributed, “In All the Right Places,” and a single track medley running around 25 minutes. This new release features the complete John Barry instrumental score, newly mastered from the 1993 two-track stereo mixes by Shawn Murphy and Dennis Sands. This features every cue Barry recorded: film versions, album versions and alternate takes.

That path to an indecent proposal starts when Diana (Demi Moore) and David (Woody Harrelson), a young couple madly in love, run into financial straits. He’s an architect in the middle of building his dream house when the recession hits. So they venture to Vegas. There Diana encounters John Gage (Robert Redford), a wealthy billionaire who takes a shine to her. After the Murphys lose everything at the craps table, Gage swoops in and asks Diana to be his lady luck on a very expensive bet. He wins, and while schmoozing them with gratitude he coolly makes his indecent proposal: one night with her for $1 million. They balk at first, but the Murphys mull it over and decide to accept. That one night, the one they promised wouldn’t mean anything, begins to unravel their marriage and expose the true cost of the deal: consuming jealousy and heartbreak.

It's great to see this expansion finally make it. I expected this to have been released years ago, to be honest.

How can we recreate original suite from all this tracks (and in which order)?

Although the track titles will be different, you should be able to match things up to the original suite using this table, which I constructed when trying to assess how much extra music there might be.

Let me expand on this. I need to get my hands on the CD to confirm this, but this is my initial guess of how I think you'd recreate the original suite. It needs refinement:

28. Main Title (album version) (2:42)
01. Main Title (3:41) — strip off the first 40 seconds

This might not be quite right because it's too long. I need to hear what some of the other early cues are, several of which appear to not be in the film. They obviously re-edited the front end of the film.

30. Drive to Vegas (album version) (1:34)

This is a guess. There is NO Drive to Vegas sequence in the film, but since this is an album version and the timings match, I'm assuming what John Barry called "Drive to Vegas" is what I called "The Dress Is For Sale". The score in the film is obviously a bit of a mash up. I need to get the CD to confirm.

10. Can’t Sleep (1:11)

I split this into two cues in my inventory

15. Diana Returns* (1:48)

I need to check this. Although Diana Returns is exactly the right track at this position, this love theme version of In All The Right Places runs over 3 minutes on the MCA CD suite and I'm not seeing an album alternate. So I'm assuming it's joined with something else and I'm guessing Last Fight based on the sequence. But then it would be too long. So maybe a crop join is needed. Or maybe it's Intoxicated David instead, which works better timings wise. Unless I missed it, I don't think this Last Fight cue is in the film. Again, I need to get the CD to confirm.

I'm getting a minor timing discrepancy as I measured the MCA CD at 2:03 here but I assume this is what I logged as Remembering.

34. Goodbye John (album version) (2:17)

Like I said, I really need to get the CD to confirm for sure, but based on matching MCA CD timings with film sequence with Intrada sequence, I think this will be it.

Option 2: Find a cheap copy of the MCA CD.

Now I've got the CD, I have a revised view for you on how you'd create the original suite:

You probably would need to do a little end/start overlapping to properly time match it.

Incidentally, the back sleeve of the CD makes it clear which track were on the album, just not in what order or where the crop points are. But strangely track 28 is not listed among the tracks owned by Geffen records even though it is clearly an album version.

Mine arrived today. So beautiful. Heartbreaking I think Doug described it, and aptly so. Just finished my first listen and I must say I got 'hot eyes' on a few of the tracks. Call me an old soppy wotsit, but it is true. Thanks for everyone involved in making this beautiful music available.
