INTRADA Announces: FUNERAL HOME Composed and Conducted by JERRY FIELDING INTRADA Special Collection Vol. 186 Intrada continues its focus on the music of Jerry Fielding with a release of his final film score, the 1980-horror film Funeral Home. Fielding chose to shy away from shrieking stings and explosive “fright” moments and, in fact, his score is rather restrained. Maybe because he had never scored a “conventional” horror picture before, the composer elected to return to the rural “dread” motifs from Straw Dogs (1971), as well as some of the atmospheric ideas from The Nightcomers (1971). Students of Fielding will also note the use of many of his familiar staples, skillfully blended with a new theme and interesting variations. The master elements for this fascinatingly complex and truly frightening score were long thought to be lost. But through a series of events unfolding over a lengthy period of time, the 24-track masters were almost literally unearthed from a drive-in theater in Ontario, Canada. Fielding was a master at using various solo colors from his woodwinds, clusters of tight harmonies in his brass, tiny metallic hits from the triangle, sharp rolls in the snare drums, florid harp passages, challenging figures for strings, and brittle melodic ideas. And thanks to the pristine condition of the master elements, it's all here in crystal clarity and featuring many cues that were dropped from the film. The film itself tells the story of a former funeral parlor that has now been turned into a guesthouse for weary travelers, overseen by old Maude Chalmers (Kay Hawtry), a cheerful, frumpish battle axe who welcomes her visitors with home-cooked aplomb. Into this house of foreboding comes Maude’s granddaughter, Heather (Lesleh Donaldson), who quickly begins to suspect that all might not be quite right. She wonders how come the other guests seem to disappear into the night without explanation and why old Grandma is heard upstairs conversing with a man who may or may not be her husband, who supposedly disappeared. Ordered! Last Fielding we got was Straw Dogs back in May last year, I think. This has been a long time coming. |

This is the best release I've seen this year and I don't even have it yet. It pleases me to no end when there is a horror score released to a movie I never thought would receive one. I know there was a heads up about this CD a few months back, but the excitement is still big for this one. Thanks Intrada! LOVE that cover art. |

I'm no direct fan of Jerry Fielding, but who can resist a cover that KICK ASS. + Me and CocoNUT' are Horror fans so. $ 115 spent on two copys of both FRIGHT NIGHT and FUNERAL HOME + shipping. Well me and CocoNUT' think it's important to support the hamsters.  |

Hey I'm with the guy above ordering TWO copies of each as well. Never in a million years thought either of these two would see the light of day on official CD. I'm so stoked over these being released together I just can't thank Intrada enough! |

Thanks so much for this release cool artwork (same with Fright Night) Both ordered. It was nice having the heads up some months back, knowing getting this release to fans would and seems to be a gamble. I really hope it sells well. I said before I don't mind paying the extra cost when it is needed. Otherwise we may never have had the release. I just had car repair work so things are tight but I had to give myself this purchase Other things can wait. Priorities people

I had supported this some time ago when it was first announced. Having the late, great Jerry Fielding's last score finally released is an event where the price matters not. His only horror score. Released by Intrada. This is a knockout release in a year that Intrada has topped themselves so many times I have lost count. Hats off to Doug, Roger and those amazing little hamsters who have made 2011 a year to remember for us score-hounds. Richard |
