UPDATE: September 28, 2011 I have FINALLY come to the conclusion of my Top 14 Re-Recordings Of All Time show. This program along with the Charles Gerhardt tribute I produced a few years ago is the most fun I've had with the show during its entire 15 year run. My 15th anniversary show will go live in a few days but before we get to that, and before we get to our final selection, let's review the rest of the albums on the list. #14 (TIE) ON THE WATERFRONT http://www.cinematicsound.net/?p=654 #14 (TIE) EL CID http://www.cinematicsound.net/?p=715 #13 FRONTIERS http://www.cinematicsound.net/?p=787 #12 THE STAR WARS TRILOGY http://www.cinematicsound.net/?p=940 #11 THE FILM SCORES http://www.cinematicsound.net/?p=955 #10 MIKLOS ROZSA CONDUCTS HIS GREAT FILM MUSIC http://www.cinematicsound.net/?p=906 #9 QUO VADIS http://www.cinematicsound.net/?p=1082 #8 YO YO MA PLAYS ENNIO MORRICONE http://www.cinematicsound.net/?p=1122 #7 THE GREAT FANTASY ADVENTURE ALBUM http://www.cinematicsound.net/?p=1180 #6 THE SEA HAWK http://www.cinematicsound.net/?p=1251 #5 IVANHOE http://www.cinematicsound.net/?p=1271 #4 JERRY GOLDSMITH: SUITES AND THEMES http://www.cinematicsound.net/?p=1276 #3 THE RIGHT STUFF/NORTH AND SOUTH http://www.cinematicsound.net/?p=1305 #2 CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND/STAR WARS http://www.cinematicsound.net/?p=1323 And now... our number 1 re-recording of all time... Joel McNeely's work with Varese in regards to classic film scores by Bernard Herrmann are outstanding re-recordings. I have loved them all (NORTH BY NORTHWEST is awesome)... but VERTIGO is a cut above the rest. |

It is one of my favourite scores but in this case I have a problem with this album missing some great tracks from the film (I specially miss "The Hotel" sequence and "The Past and The Girl" and the missing strings buildup between "Farewell // The Tower" as existing in the film and Conlon recordings. It is a great album and I also listen to it from time to time, but these minor faults prevent me to consider it the #1 rerecording. |

I've only listened to a few of those albums, and I normally don't like re-recordings, but "The Great Fantasy-Adventure Album" is one that I really like. The performances and sound quality is incredible for most of the selections. It features the neatest variation of the Terminator theme that I've yet to hear, and the performance for the Red October hymn is perfect. |

McNeely's recording of Vertigo is excellent, with the ambient sound giving the score an appropriately dreamy feel. That said, I find the James Conlon recording gives it quite a run for its money. There are drawbacks to the Conlon; you have to order the Douglas Gordon's Feature Film coffee table book to get it, there are no track markers on the disc and the sound quality isn't quite as good as the Varèse Sarabande disc, but it's complete and the single most "Herrmannesque" performance of the score I've heard (that includes the original Muir Matheson tracks), and the one I return to most often. |

I love the two Re-Recordings of the two CONAN Films by Prometheus (and yes, I am going to buy the INTRADA OST CDs when they come out. When again?? Any dates available? ![]() The sound quality is awesome and I do not regret buying them. btw. I would never, ever buy a re-recording of STAR WARS. Why should I? I was surprised it was mentioned here.... NORTH BY NORTHWEST seems to be outstanding I heard. So, maybe, that one will be considered. Phil |
