With all those great releases coming out from US-labels, I just want to turn your attention to equally important events in preservation of german filmmusic: The german Filmmusic magazine Cinema Musica released in cooperation with Alhambra Records four CDs of classic german film and tv music mastered from original session elements from the 60s, 70s and 80s stored in the german film archives. The first two discs are dedicated to Rolf Wilhelm's music for Michael Kehlmann TV films: Rolf Wilhelm 1: Tarabas (TV/1981) + Hiob (TV/1979) Rolf Wilhelm 2: Flucht Ohne Ende (TV/1986) + Radetzkymarsch (TV/1965) + Don Carlos (1961) These two CDs mark the biggest release of Wilhelm's music since the efforts of the now-defunct Cobra records label. The other two discs are dedicated to Karl-Ernst Sasser's music for DEFA-westerns: Karl-Ernst Sasser 1: Blutsbrueder (1976) + Spur Des Falken (1968) Karl-Ernst Sasser 2: Weisse Woelfe (1969) + Ulzana (1974) The magazine already announced that more releases of Rolf Wilhelm's music are in the works. Finally, the german film music treasures receive equal restoration and care as their Hollywood counterparts. |

The only Rolf Wilhem score I own is DIE NIBELUNGEN on the Cobra label (2 CDs). It is a large scale epic score, with nods to Rozsa (KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE) and Tiomkin (FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE). Good models, in any case. b. |

For some reason, the Sasser CDs are not yet listed at amazon.de maybe due to a delay. However, the german soundtrack retail store offers sound clips from all four CDs (click on the image of the disc you want to listen to and when the next window opens, click the cover again to hear excerpts). More news were revealed as well: Upcoming Rolf Wilhelm releases will include his complete recordings for Thomas Mann films like Tonio Kroeger Doktor Faustus and Unordnung und Frühes Leid (excerpts of these were previously available on a compilation), Via Mala paired with Die Heiden Von Kummerow + Als Mutter Streikte, Lausbubengeschichten, as well as Wilhelm's final scores for the big screen, namely Loriot's Pappa Ante Portas and Loriot's Oedipussi paired with Rosamunde. A special bonus: The composers personally provided the detailed liner notes about every aspect of the music (sadly in german only). |
