I've read about a new release of Studs Lonigan on the Quartet Label and that it was produced by Doug. I own the "old" varese and the question is: will the new one an improvement to the old, soundwise ? was the varese edition mono ? and is it true Doug, that yiu saved the tapes in the 90's, sounds interesting ![]() thanks andy |

Nothing to see here folks... oops. I mean, don't get too excited. I actually completely produced the Varese Sarabande release as well... but those guys wouldn't afford me a credit. The nice people at Quartet are a lot less stingy. Yes, I confess it was I who saved what appear to be the only surviving stereo elements on the score, an acquisition I received many many years ago from a wonderful guy named "Dub" Taylor, who technically is really the one who saved them. Happily he passed them onto me. They were in reasonably clean shape and were genuine two-track stereo mixes. I edited and mastered the album for Varese a few years ago, doing the best job I could in getting as much sound out of the tapes as was possible, but for those of you thinking about this new version... the technology hasn't changed all that much since then. This release pretty much offers identical audio to the Varese release. However, the good people at Quartet have slightly altered the sequence and, in particular, have provided more elaborate packaging with MUCH better liner notes. So if you missed this movingly nostalgic, ultimately powerful score on that first go-round... definitely support this new Quartet release. --Doug |

thanks for the info Doug, so i can stay with my old varese. but its a shame not to give you credits, i checked the booklet and find a lot of other people mentioned.. not very kind of varese ![]() it even shows "produced by jerry goldsmith" so i thought he was involved in some way and perhaps offered the tapes. so thank you for the true story behind it ![]() and thanks for the 2 disney cd, an instant order! I think somebody at FSM said the QR was missing one extra cue on the VS release. |

We're just thankful you did what you did to preserve them and make it possible for someone to release them. I thank you. |
