INTRADA Announces: TWO FLAGS WEST Composed by HUGO FRIEDHOFER NORTH TO ALASKA Composed by LIONEL NEWMAN INTRADA Special Collection Volume 168 Intrada continues its series of double headers from the vaults of Twentieth Century Fox with scores spanning the last decade of the Golden Age. The 1950 feature Two Flags West, directed by Robert Wise, is the more serious of the two, telling the story of confederate prisoners of war who would be granted amnesty if they joined the Union Army to fight against warring Indian tribes in the Far West. Georgia soldiers recruited by a Union commander from the Rock Island prison and sent, with their Colonel (Cotten), to Fort Thorn in the remote New Mexican wilderness. Composing duties fell to Hugo Friedhofer, who penned another classic western score that same year, Broken Arrow. From its opening moments when it makes something dark of both “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” and “Dixie,”, this is a score—interpreted by conductor Alfred Newman—that lends added profundity to an already grave undertaking. Also omnipresent is a fanfare-like Western motif that forms the basis for much of the opening credit music and intertwines, spookily, with the “Battle Hymn.” There's also what Friedhofer referred to as "Wagon Train" music, but notably on display when the score references Indians on the warpath after the senseless killing of one of their young leaders. The 1960 feature North to Alaska boasts a striking cast of John Wayne, Stewart Granger, Capucine, Ernie Kovacs, and Fabian. Featuring songs and score from the film, it is a handsomely burnished example of what the Fox music department could do, as a hard-working collective enterprise. Like many Fox films of the period, this one was a communal effort, with a single composer (Newman, in this instance) writing a few themes, and the orchestrators arranging the tunes. Interspersed among the vocals is colorful underscore music featuring a diversity of style. Both scores are in stereo from the original session masters stored at Fox. This release is limited to 1000 units. INTRADA Special Collection Vol. 168 Retail Price: $19.99 AVAILABLE NOW For track listing and sound samples, please visit http://store.intrada.com/s.nl/it.A/id.7038/.f |

The poster art for North to Alaska is rather funny. It must be John Wayne's floating head and the stern look on his face. ![]() |

Glad I put an order in. I love 1950's Hollywood western scores. This film I have never seen, it looks to be a gem. Hugo Friedhofer was (is) always tops. |

I guess congrats are in order about the sell out! So congratulations! -- but it didn't exactly make my day! I went to bed with a cold early last night -- and woke up to this sell out! So while I won't whine -- is there a chance there are any copies left? Has anyone found copies at a reputable retailer (other than the ebay guy with one for $90?)? Sorry to even sound like a glimmer of whining -- but I am disappointed. A great release. I've wanted a release of North to Alaska forever -- it was one of my favorite films as a kid when I saw it on its first release. It's good that releases like this sell -- truly super -- just wish I'd have known how popular it would be! |

In any case, I wasn't planning to get this immediately, but once I saw the SOLD OUT notice here, I ran to Screen Archives to nab one at midnight. All I know is, this is another winner of a release. Thank you, Intrada! |

I thought both recordings would be around for at least a few days. A 1950 western score recording in stereo? That definately puts it in another league. |

Well, I got my order in for 1 copy in time, too bad Intrada lets people like wookie881 buy more than one copy. Wish Intrada would track this guy down in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and limit his next 4-5 purchases to 1 copy each!!! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0594592888 I have another hobby with limited editions, which that company limits the items to 1 per customer and they are numbered. They are keeping records so if the item that you purchase shows up at places like eBay within the first year after the release, YOU LOSE YOUR MEMBERSHIP!!! |

Intrada sometimes doesn't even sell out of their 1000 editions immediately; I think your idea would be disastrous for them. |
