Hi Doug, If you have not already read it, you might also enjoy J. Hoberman's THE DREAM LIFE - MOVIES, MEDIA AND THE MYTHOLOGY OF THE SIXTIES, published by The New Press in 2003. Composers do get mentioned in the book, including Dimitri Tiomkin's involvement in the making of John Wayne's THE ALAMO ("conceived by members [presumably these members included Tiomkin and screenwriter James Webb] of the staunchly conservative Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals [MPA]"), according to the author (Village Voice, New York Times, The London Review of Books, etc...). The book provides a fascinating back story to many of my favourite films. b. |

I had the advantage of seeing most of the movies ,mentioned in the book,in first run theatres upon their initial realease If you think watching these movies on DVD is something You should see the following on a big screen the rafting sequence from Deliverance... The toll Booth scene from the Godfather...or The desolate streets from The Last Picture Show I realise I could go on and on...it was an exciting time for American Movies ...for eight weekends in a row I went to see The French Connection |
