[quote="Ron Pulliam" I think Shuken & Hayes played a HUGE part in the delicacies, as well as drama, of how the music sounds. I'm certain Hamlisch learned a lot from them...and he certainly owes a lot to them. [/quote] I concur with this statement, Ron. There are a number of composers who benefited from their exposure to these guys. Interesting to note that Shuken had a career as a composer, begining in 1937 at Paramount. He also had co-composer status, on STAGECOACH, along with Richard Hageman, and others. An Oscar winner. [Max Steiner should have won for GONE WITH THE WIND, in my opinion.] There is an interesting article waiting to be written on Shuken and Hayes. My memory is also telling me that Jack Hayes helped out Quincy Jones along the way, but I would have to check. MACKENNA'S GOLD is the score I am thinking of. Elmer Bernstein, in the 60s, is the most apparent example. b. |

Marvin Hamlisch was very gracious about the contributions that Shuken and Hayes made to the Swimmer; see the CD liner notes by Jeff Bond. This project took a long time and almost didn't happen on many occasions, but for the perseverence...of ME! Just kidding, sort of. Very gracious thanks to Sony BMG in New York and to Sony Pictures Ent. here in L.A. for cooperating to allow inclusion of all the previously unreleased bits. And special thanks most of all to Jeff Bond who is the world's #1 The Swimmer score fan. Lukas |
