INTRADA Announces: PATTON Composed by JERRY GOLDSMITH INTRADA MAF 7110 For the Oscar-nominated score the 1970 20th-Century Fox film Patton, composer Jerry Goldsmith wrote a brief score for the epic-length story of this most famous WWII general. Goldsmith treated Patton as a three-tiered personality. "So there was, naturally, the Warrior, which would be treated with the march; the religious aspect of him, which was the chorale; and then the fanfare, whichwas the archaic, his belief in reincarnation,” remarked Goldsmith. When the film was first released, an actual soundtrack album was not made available. Instead, Goldsmith chose to go to England and record the highlights with faithful performances that he could tailor for listening purposes, as opposed to tempos and timings that mirrored the needs of the picture. It was a superb performance, one the composer himself described as “the best,” in a detailed recording that enhanced everything from the balancing of those famous echoplex trumpet triplets with the orchestra through the organ passages right on down to the snapping pizzicato figures in the strings. In addition to delivering a commanding performance, Goldsmith scored a unique new sequence never recorded for the film: a dynamic rendition of his German march melody, only a variation of which was quoted on the soundtrack in "German Advance." Goldsmith took the opportunity to score a special version of this striking march in a straight-forward setting, illuminating the importance of the melody and using it to dramatically close out the first side of his original LP under the title “Winter March.” On the 1970 stereo album released by 20th Century-Fox Records, the second side closed with the “End Title” actually being mixed in mono and relegated to one channel to make room for George C. Scott’s moving final speech. This premiere release of the LP program on CD presents that sequence in stereo without the dialogue as a bonus. The second disc features a re-issue of the original soundtrack recording. It also features a bonus: a lengthy track featuring a working session with Goldsmith and the echoplex to get the echoing fanfare just right. This release features both discs in pristine sound, finally presenting all the material recorded for Patton in a single, definitive soundtrack edition for the film's 40th anniversary. I have long held that the original LP was the best stand-alone musical representation of the score. I'm very pleased not only to have it, but the bonus track of the stereo finale! Thank you!!! |

Great score. In my personal opinion, Goldsmith's most profoundly intelligent, 'gets inside the film and character', apt score. His most Oscar worthy, again just in my opinion. Scores like Leviathan are fun, but this is lofty in all possible ways. Yeah. |

Thank you all. I was quite surprised to see this one presented in this form but it makes perfect sense. Patton was one of my earliest recollections of how important a good film score can be. I was too young to appreciate what JG had done or who he was. But I remember thinking how I wanted to hear more music like this. Along with Damnation Alley this score gave me the film music bug and my interest in all things Goldsmith. Intrada were right to make a definitive release of this score. I love the film soundtrack as it features my favourite cue sadly missed from the re-recording but I do love the album as I played my old Casablanca lp until it was warn out. Thank you again. |

I just picked this up yesterday and must say that this is one impressive release. WOW! It's really like hearing it for the first time and that's not to give credit to just the music, as the whole experience is enhanced greatly by all involved. From Julie Kirgo's thoughtful and detailed liners notes to Joe's packaging design and right on to Doug's golden ear for sonic purity, this is one hell of a release. Should I even mention the price tag to own this epic? Simply mind blowing. Really, you guys have done a great job, so keep 'em coming. Thanks INTRADA! Matt |

Congrats to Intrada on this release. I have the FSM, Varese recording, copy of the LP and my own personal version I made years ago off the laserdisc , to include the echo-plex sessions. ![]() But I gladly purchased this set. |

So.... is there any reason for me to keep my FSM version...not that I'm planning on getting rid of it. ![]() |
