Post subject: | List of high definition soundtrack discs |
Hello to all the audiophiles out there. Here's an attempt of creating an exhaustive list of all the high definition soundtracks (higher than the standard CD 16bits/44 kHz) that have ever been released. I'm not aiming this topic only at people having a state-of-the-art high fidelity/high technology equipment : to be able to listen to those discs, all you need is a DVD Video Player. Of course, your listening experience will vary depending on your general sound equipment (receiver, speakers,...) All the discs listed here can be played in high definition and/or multi-channel on a simple DVD Video Player, but some contain even higher definition PCM only accessible with a DVD-Audio Player. I'm not listing SACD because they only have a conventional CD sound without a SACD player. Some of those discs contain a DTS sound that needs a digital connexion with a DTS receiver, otherwise all you'll get is pink noise. Some contain a Dolby Digital sound which needs a digital connexion with a Dolby Digital receiver to be enjoyed in surround, otherwise you'll only get a stereo sound more compressed than a stereo CD sound. All the "Classic Records" discs are playable on any DVD Video Player connected to any regular stereo receiver, in high definition (24bits/96KHz). That's the beauty of it ! A.I. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (John Williams) Label : Warner Bros Format : DVD-Audio 24bit/96kHz PCM 5.1 24bit/96kHz PCM Stereo 16bit/48kHz Dolby 5.1 CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND original 1977 stk (John Williams) Label : Classic Records Format : DVD-Audio 24bit/192 kHz PCM Stereo 24bit/96 kHz PCM Stereo TITANIC (James Horner) Label : Sony Classical Format : CD DTS 5.1 – 20bit/44 kHz GLORY (James Horner) Label : Classic Records Format : DVD 24bit/96 kHz PCM Stereo THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD (Erich Wolfgang Korngold) Label : Naxos Format : DVD-Audio 24bit/48 Khz PCM 5.1 20bit/48 Khz DTS 5.1 16bit/48 kHz Dolby Digital 5.1 THE ADVENTURES OF MARK TWAIN (Max Steiner) Label : Naxos Format : DVD-Audio 24bit/48 Khz PCM 5.1 20bit/48 Khz DTS 5.1 16bit/48 kHz Dolby Digital 5.1 HAMLET (Dmitri Shostakovich) Label : Naxos Format : DVD-Audio 24bit/48 Khz PCM 5.1 20bit/48 Khz DTS 5.1 16bit/48 kHz Dolby Digital 5.1 CASINO ROYALE (Burt Bacharach) Label : Classic Records Format : DVD-Audio 24bit/192 kHz PCM Stereo 24bit/96 kHz PCM Stereo TWO FOR THE ROAD – THE MUSIC OF HENRY MANCINI (Cond. by Dave Grusin) Label : Digital Sound Format : DVD-Audio 24bit/48 Khz Dolby Digital 5.1 24bit/48 Khz PCM Stereo Format : CD 20bit/44 kHz DTS 5.1 KOYAANISQATSI (Philip Glass) Label : Nonesuch Format : DVD-Audio 24bit/96 kHz PCM Stereo 16bit/44 kHz Dolby Digital 5.1 FILM BUSTERS (Elmer Berstein & Various) Label : Denon Records Format : DVD-Audio 24-bit/96 kHz PCM 5.1 24-bit/96 kHz PCM Stereo 16bit/44 kHz Dolby Digital 5.1 THE LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY (Howard Shore) Label : Warner Bros Format : DVD-Audio 24bit/48 kHz PCM 5.1 24bit/48 kHz PCM Stereo 16bit/48 kHz Dolby Digital 5.1 16bit/48 kHz Dolby Digital Stereo I must have forgotten some, so please help me to complete the list ! "Star Trek: Generations" and "Star Trek: Insurrection" (Dennis McCathy / Jerry Goldsmith) I recall both being 24 bit, or one being 16 bit. |

Thanks for your participation tharp, but only the recording was made in 24bit. These Star Trek discs were encoded in standard 16bit/44 kHz PCM stereo, though a CD still has a better sound when it's made from a better digital master recording. Star Trek Nemesis did have a high def disc from Varèse Sarabande, but only for specific SACD players. |

Isn't at least one of those two ST OSTs an HDCD? That means that you CAN listen to it in slightly higher resolution with a proper player (or Windows Media Player on computer, provided a proper soundcard) |

I listed them as I was pulling them from my CD racks. Also, you must not forget Howard Shore's THE LORD OF THE RINGS-THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS of all three films. Each set includes a DVD-Audio disc that includes the scores in Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital Stereo and Advanced Resolution Surround and Advanced Resolution Stereo in 48khz/24-bit sound. The sound is absolutely incredible on these discs. I have all of the discs that were listed by the first poster save the CLOSE ENCOUNTERS disc. I really wish that both formats had taken off since both offered fantastic listening experiences. Maybe Blu-ray High Def audio will take up the charge. I've got Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross's score for THE SOCIAL NETWORK on it's way so I'm very interested in hearing how Blu-ray High Def audio compares to SACD and DVD-Audio. Cheers! Harry |

You're welcome. I'm listening to the SACD of E.T. right now and the sound is wonderful. I haven't listened to this in a while. The "Titanic" SACD is very similar to the DTS CD but a bit cleaner and the placement of instruments in the mix is much more precise. I tried to get a hold of the CE3K disc as well and they had it at The Elusive Disc website, but I waited too long and before I knew it it was gone. Though technically not FILM MUSIC there's Danny Elfman's SERENADA SCHIZOPHRENA which is in CD Audio, SACD Stereo and SACD Stereo Surround and John Williams YO-YO MA PLAYS THE MUSIC OF JOHN WILLIAMS and the Vince Guaraldi Trio's A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS in CD Audio, SACD Stereo. Cheers! Harry |

With some long researches on the web, I've finally found that's selling the CE3K Classic Records disc for $20 ! I was really happy so I ordered it immediatly ! Don't wait this time... ! ^^ E.T. must be amazing in surround sound, remixed from the original 24 tracks ! I'm just sorry I don't have a SACD player, and even if I did, my receiver wouldn't support the analog output for each channel. It would be a very good idea that someone release a universal (DVD-A/SACD) Blu-Ray player with multi-channel through HDMI one of these days ! Sony ? Anyone ? lol |

There is a DVD-Audio from Poledouris' "The Touch". I love that score. |

All these complex details (different codecs, upgrading equipment, connexions issues) just didn't help to promote those super formats ! I recently bought a new Pioneer receiver compatible with the latest DTS-HD and Dolby True HD codecs and with HDMI in. Hopefully, I should now keep it for many years to come... I've heard about those Oppo universal players. I guess it's the just the beginning... |

I think where they screwed up on the whole DVD-A / SACD debacle was with refusing to settle on one format and going from there. It just got worse when DualDisc came along and then quickly died. Now SACD is used primarily for classical and jazz, while DVD-A is more or less gone. That same way of thinking almost did hi-def video in too, with the whole HD-DVD vs. Blu-ray battle, though, thankfully, that one ended early enough. But there are still hardware manufacturers who recognise that there are consumers who have discs and are making BD players that support both codecs. Cheers! Harry BTW: One of the best DVD-A discs that I have and use as a demo disc is the two-channel CASINO ROYALE soundtrack. The sound is simply spectacular on that release! |

How could noone mention the Capriccio recording of Alexander Nevsky on SACD (the ONLY one with the complete score)? Also on Capriccio are three volumes on SACD of Alfred Schnitke film music (I have the first two, they are wonderful) |

Just received my copy of THE SOCIAL NETWORK score on BD and I must say that the sound is incredibly good. While some may not be crazy about the score in general I happen to like it and find that the imaging is terrific. The music is presented in PCM 96/24 5.1 and 2.0. Bass is very deep and powerful. Both mixes are clear and precise and the surround mix is not at all gimmicky. I do wish it would've been packaged like a BD instead of in a digipak like the regular release, but that's minor. I'm hopeful that other artists will pursue this format. Does every release need to be given this treatment? No. The format may never break into the mainstream but for those of us who've been pining the loss (more or less) of high res audio releases this is a welcome release! Cheers, Harry |
