I've always wondered what opinion Jerry Goldsmith may have had about the 1966 recording Impressions Of A Patch Of Blue from the improv / free jazz musician Walt Dickerson. Released in 1966 and featuring Sun Ra as performer.

I remember reading somewhere that Goldsmith was very critical of his themes as performed by Mecca (I think that's his name). I've always believed he may have had a much better opinion of Impressions of A Patch Of Blue.

Walt Dickerson recorded Vibes In Motion as well which is his interpretation of themes from Lawrence Of Arabia.

Both recordings are excellent.

I have the MGM LP of the recording, noticed the Japanese CD issue a few weeks ago and have been thinking about grabbing a copy. It's definitely worth a listen as those with an open mind already know.

What a great concept in 1966 and unusual for the MGM label.

Sun Ra is really a trip. Watched Space Is The Place awhile back. There are scenes in that film that are just so damn crazy it's hillarious.

These appear to be some interesting recordings. I hit Amazon and ordered a few to check them out.

Commercial pop versions a la Meco have nothing in common with jazz interpretations a la Walt Dickerson.
The former may make you cringe, the latter may illuminate new facets of the music. I don't know what Goldsmith may have thought about Dickerson's take on his themes, but I am pretty sure that whatever he thought of Meco stuff is no indication.

I received some Walt Dickerson albums and there is indeed nothing to cringe about while listening to them at all.
