The Mystery of Rampo (1995) by Akira Senju

Pan Tadeusz (2000) by Wojciech Kilar

Two great scores for two obscure movies.

And in addition to Senju's replacement score to Rampo, there's also the original score by Masahiro Kawasaki, which lately I've found myself playing a lot more often than the Senju version.

Joe Hisaishi? My favourite composer at the moment. FINALLY managed to catch Princess Mononoke yesterday, what a wondrous film. And ingenious score.

I don't own nearly enough Hisaishi, but I guess he's one of those composers you're really can't go wrong with. His talent for a beautiful melody (or two) is unmatched these days. I hope he stays in Japan and provides music for the ages without the interference of producers/music supervisor etc.

I'm gonna let the stars speak for themselves:

Princess Mononoke ****½ / Symphonic Album *****
Spirited Away *****
Howl's Moving Castle ****½ / Image Album ****
Kikujiro ****
Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea ****½
Works I ****½
Joe Hisaishi in Budokan - 25 Years Studio Ghibli *****½ (self-made concert compilation)

My Neighbour Totoro, Laputa - Castle in the Sky (what a theme!), Nausicaä from the Valley of the Wind and the albums for Four Gods are on my "Need-to-acquire-soon" list. :)

I have said this so many times that I almost feel like Brian May's personal agent, but his score for Frog Dreaming should be owned by all who claim to be a film music lover.

It is seriously that good.

The second best score I heard this decade comes from the pen of John Williams' orchestrator, Conrod Pope. His epic, thematic, choral masterpiece to Pavilion of Women was an eye opener. I don't know if it's the John Williams influence or just the diversity of the score but this underrated score is absolutely superb. Some cues are completely ethnic in orchestration, then there are some cues with traditional orchestral orchestrations, then Pope adds a chorus, some percussion, some uplifting cues, tragic cues, great thematic material... I could go on forever. I think it's the mix of both Eastern and Western musical sensibilities which sold me on this score. And who can go wrong when you add an instrument like the "Erhu," which is a fascinating instrument to hear. It has the ability to sound both heroic and tragic at the same time. Pavilion of Women is truly a magnificent score and is just behind James Newton Howard's score to Signs as the best of the last ten years!
