Okay. You're on that mythical desert island. The one where you have a CD player or iPod or whatever and you're allowed to pick only a few select things to listen to. Besides food and water, maybe a little shelter, you've got nothing else.

So try this spin on picking your favorites. What if you could only have access to scores from one particular year? Just one year. What year you would choose? And list the requisite five scores that best represent that year for you. (Keep it at five for the sake of sanity.) Here's my stab at it:

I wanted to say 1981 because my favorite score of all time was composed during that year (Raiders) but I couldn't list 5 GREAT scores that I would want to take with me and listen to all the time. So, I'll choose...

Making a quick list and then checking the years, I see 1982 wins:

This is a surprisingly tough exercise Doug!

Thanks to you folks who got into the spirit of it. It's fun to see where interests lie, decade-wise. At the moment, it's all about the 1970's onwards. I didn't see anyone yet claiming 1943 or 1951 or whatever. Nothing from the 1960's even. Jeff reminded me of my interest in SPARTACUS (1960)... and I'd also toss in THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN that year and PSYCHO... but I couldn't easily come up with the other two choices.

I have a unique problem here in that if I only had five scores for a whole year, one of them really should be what is probably among my top three scores ever, and certainly one that would keep me sanest, Michael Nyman's Wonderland from 1999. Unfortunately, 1999 is then rather sparse for other scores, particularly ones that would be pleasant listening on a deserted island (best not to take Ravenous, might give me bad ideas)

So I'll instead have to go for one of my other all time favourites, which you'll see at the top of 1991:
