To me, though, "Goodbye, Mr. Chips" never seemed wrong or out of place. If anything, it got everything right that other musicals got wrong. But...it was a time of change. THE film of the year was "Midnight Cowboy"...followed by "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid." Folks weren't into old-fashioned love stories (although the next year, "Love Story" would capture the fancy of the nation...and that was as old-fashioned as they come...boy meets girl, girl gets boy, boy loses girl to fatal disease...good stuff).
"...Chips" has had its defenders through the years...and I think it holds up wonderfully well as a totally involving, beautifully written and acted, and exquisitely mounted motion picture entertainment. They skimped on nothing...and it all shows up in the film.[/quote]
As I recall, it did fairly well in it's initial release, didn't burn the box office up, but I remember it played a while and seemed to get good notices. It's stood up nicelyl over the years. The movie musical seems to have gone the way of the western!
