I've never liked that much Alex North's take on the 80's heroic fantasy genre. It's seriously lacking of a certain sense of romantism and adventure. I'd rather listen to Conan (Basil Poledouris), The Dark Crystal (Trevor Jones), Fire & Ice (William Kraft), The Beastmaster (Lee Holdridge), Krull (James Horner), The Sword and the Sorcerer (David Whitaker) from around the same time. I believe that in 1981 (the year of Dragonslayer) the "heroic fantasy" score was to be invented yet. Trevor Jones was a serious step forward with Excalibur (1981) in composing a strong romantic and heroic score (certainly inspired by the success of Star Wars and the presence of Wagner in the temp/final movie tracks). The same year, Elmer Bernstein also did so well on the heroic fantasy sequences of Heavy Metal, still on a romantic/heroic mode. While Alex North tried a complex abstract work that is missing the point of "heroic fantasy" to me. |
