| Post subject: | Hans Zimmer: Why the Hate? |
One thing I've noticed among score reviewers, and some film score community fans is a large dislike for Hans Zimmer. Personally, I've enjoyed most of his works and find him to be an entertaining and dedicated composer who has a great body of work. I will even admit that I enjoy his synthesizer sounds when they aren't overplayed. So that being said, why the dislike for Zimmer? |

Those synthesizers are my biggest gripe simply because they are sort of 'filling out' the sound of the orchestra beneath them but they really don't need to be there outside of rhythmic pulses and the like. If you compare "Batman Begins" with "The Dark Knight", the one big advantage the latter has over the former is that TDK sounded like a real live orchestra playing the music, which was largely the same music as in Begins. Begins has a 'cheap' sound to its action music but that same music is better off in TDK because it's real. As for the dislike most have, it's pretty much the same opinion everywhere: That one 'Zimmer sound' in every movie under the sun by a variety of composers who all work under him, and he is seen as being a huge influence on the current state of film music as a result of that and many don't see that influence as a good thing at all. |
