But what about the "BASE" factor on the GNP CD? I know that cruddy
system that was briefly used for mixing or enhancing albums in the early 90's went bye bye fast, did that affect anything on the GNP vs CC?

While we're here, Doug & Roger, PLEASE tell me if I need to track down the WB France cd of OUTLAND - same question as above, since this was BASE'd also, but I can't find if the WB vs GNP sounds any better, and I LOVE this score.....but if it's 20 bucks to you guys for a new title or that one, you keep winning out!!!

I can confirm that there is absolutely no difference in sonics between the Collector's Choice and GNP Crescendo disc. I was swayed to order it by the same comment that you were, but the claim is either false or a placebo effect.

The sound on the Warner France edition of Outland isn't identical to the GNP Crescendo tracks, however. It is mastered at hotter levels and appears to have slightly better bass, but the differences are pretty minimal otherwise. From an audiophile standpoint, there is a difference between the two that makes the Warner France version slightly more desirable, but no more than slightly.

While I appreciate the return to the old cover for the Collector's Choice version, the notes on that edition pale in comparison to those for the GNP Crescendo, and the copy on the Warner France is totally ludicrous, including a note that the recording venue was unknown (er… Abbey Road?) and that the score had never been released before on CD (what about the aforementioned GNP Crescendo disc?) and that "The Rec Room" was not composed by Goldsmith (actually, "The Rec Room" that is on the album was indeed composed by Goldsmith but not used; the source cue that appears in the film instead was not).

I think that the additional cue(s?) that Morton Stevens composed for Outland was not included on the album, and wasn't ever credited on the LP.

I really like Outland. In the notes, the score is compared to Alien, which I have noticed is usually the point of reference for it, mostly because the industrial landscape appears to be very similar (indeed, one can easily postulate that Con Am is a competitor of Weyland-Yutani). While there are certainly some similarities, such as the atmospheric main title (not on the album), I have usually considered Outland to have had much more in common with Goldsmith's action scores than Alien, which is much more in a horror vein. Indeed, the score that I tend to associate most closely with Outland is First Blood, as they share those jagged horn lines and many elements of orchestration.
