INTRADA Announces: SCARECROWS Composed and Conducted by TERRY PLUMERI INTRADA Signature Edition ISE 1032 The 1988 MGM film Scarecrows is the story of five highly-trained and heavily-armed criminals who murder their way into possession of a three-million-dollar military payroll and escape into Mexico without a scratch. Double crossed by one of their own—who parachutes out of the plane with all the money—they find themselves making an unexpected stop at a deserted farm, which soon reveals itself to be haunted by deadly, zombie-like scarecrows. And so begins the journey in which those, who saw themselves as hunters…become the hunted. Scarecrows was the first score composed by Terry Plumeri (at least under his own name!), and while the budget required a relatively small orchestra, it was a perfect fit for the film. As Plumeri describes, "In retrospect, the size of the orchestra seems perfect for the visuals, the characters and the story. Some of the unusual elements, which appear in the orchestration of the score, are the simultaneous use of the bass clarinet and the contra bass clarinet, which gave the low ominous quality often associated with the appearance of the scarecrows. There were percussive flavors, which were prepared specifically for the scarecrows' environment, like the spring, which was stretched over a large gong and precedes the main title music. The bass and alto flutes contributed chilling coolness at times, as did the high, squealing sound of the Eb clarinet played by Robert Fitzer. The strings, which consisted of an augmented string quartet, are full of uneasy and creepy flavors, which worked very well for a haunted farm environment." The resulting score remains one of Plumeri's favorites and is a striking horror work. This release is limited to 1000 copies.
