Not necessarily. He has created some great action scores in his career.

His Dark Knight score is brilliant.

[quote="DemonStar"]I like his action scores a lot and while it's true he's got a signature style, I don't find them robotized or anything. The Rock, Crimson Tide, Black Rain and the action music from his other films like Lion King, Prince Of Egypt, Spirit, Kung Fu Panda, the PoTCs and Angels & Demons are very good too. I do agree though that other composers and his RC people trying to imitate his sound and ending up doing a poor "clone" job is not something I like, but I don't blame Hans for that. He did produce some fine composers out of RC (Harry Gregson-Williams, John Powell, Nick Glennie-Smith, Henry Jackman, Jim Dooley).

This is a balanced perspective that I pretty much agree with, including the scores given special mention. CRIMSON TIDE I listened to a lot, although not recently. KUNG FU PANDA I saw with my grandson, and ended up liking the score. I would add BEYOND RANGOON as being a fine Zimmer score. Nick Glennie-Smith's WE WERE SOLDIERS is also a good score. Harry Gregson-Williams I pay attention to (My favourite being KINGDOM OF HEAVEN), but John Powell is hit and miss for me. I don't know Henry Jackman and Jim Dooley.

i agree with doug about others following his style, but im more old school sounds,i dont consider him a composer like goldsmith ,williams ,e bernstein etc, he his too much a keyboard composer.and dark knight score hmm personally couldnt get through any of that on cd,but but each to their own.also was he the one who introduced that dreadfull wailing voice in scores? but spose film makers are to blame for that.

Zimmer has created some great action scores and this was a new sound when he arrived, that has been followed by many others since then, as it's been told. But I really think he's even a better drama composer. Hans Zimmer has a very similar way to produce emotion through his music to James Horner, beyond the fact that they both like to use solo voices and ethnic instruments in their scores.
I've been lucky to see Ron Howard once in a small conference and he told us that he was a fan of Horner and Zimmer because they had the same emotional qualities.

Despite being a devotee of his score for Paperhouse back in the early 90s, there was a period of time when the name "Hans Zimmer" and/or "Media Ventures" would raise vehement bile from me. That time has long since past, and I have to admit that Zimmer has indeed composed quite a few scores that I do indeed like, and has inspired many younger people to take an interest in film music.

I did and still do take issue with the Media Ventures/Remote Control 'one score fits all' approach that seems to be inevitable with any Jerry Bruckheimer production, but many of the composers whose work irked me so much when they started out there have since produced music that I have enjoyed very much (e.g. John Powell and Harry Gregson-Williams).

In fact, it was Thor Joachim Haga who put the MV/RC sound into a perspective that allowed it to make sense for me. He mentioned to somebody else that Zimmer and his compatriots were not going for an orchestral sound at all, but a progressive rock sound that incorporates and orchestra. It may not be my favorite method of orchestration, but it makes a hell of a lot more sense to me as music from this point of view.
