A listen to "Soft Scene" from THE THIEF WHO CAME TO DINNER reminded me that Mancini would occasionally write secondary themes that were more-than-worthy but probably not destined for popularity (I always thought it was because they were rather long-lined and covered a wide stretch of intervals.)
I believe it is "Dreamy" (or "Orange Float") from THE RETURN OF THE PINK PANTHER that features a piano theme over strings that is just.... uh.... dreamy:
And he named the lesbian scene from ONCE IS NOT ENOUGH as a great theme (I haven't heard it yet).
I also like "Pesce!" from WHO IS KILLING THE GREAT CHEFS OF EUROPE.
Any other worthy, secondary, non-title-theme, not-the-primary-song-in-the-score pieces by Mancini I've not mentioned?
