It's silly to try and explain "nostalgia" favorites. They are what they are. I'm in the camp that loves movies and thinks anything with a cast like this one has deserves a view. But going more personal, I like this movie a lot because it covers a part of war that generally doesn't get covered in detail. War at the command level. We've got lots of war movies with soldiers in battle, and lately they've gotten pretty fierce. But it's rare to find a movie about battle from the viewpoint of the officers and admirals and generals and other leaders who map up the attack plans, give the commands and whatnot. One look at the Saul Bass logo with that uniformed arm pointing tells all: it's a military movie about authority and command. It ain't perfect but it's still fascinating. --Doug |
