What we're talking about applies to all forms of music. We recently had a discussion at Maintitles about Stravinsky and the majority couldn't handle [ The Rite of Spring. When I was in my late teens and early 20's I couldn't handle it either. Today I truly understand what a masterpiece it is. Many of the new composers I have a difficult time getting into. Perhaps a lot of it has to do with the fact that the films have little or no interest. I was conned into watching 300 and I thought it was one of the worst films/scores I've ever seen in my life. Clint Eastwood. He gets bashed constantly for his sparse and minimal approach to composing themes. Some people even say it's not "real film music", whatever the hell that means. Real to who? Bottom line: Eastwood's approach, while maybe not everyone's cup of tea, is usually highly effective and perfectly suited for the stories he tells. If anyone is paying attention, they might notice that Eastwood favors subtlety in just about every aspect of his filmmaking. Case in point, the recently released CHANGELING, which I found to be his most moving and lovliest theme since UNFORGIVEN. But people bitch about his scores being nominated for awards, etc. Eastwood's contributions are no less valuable than a "traditional" film composer who uses a full orchestra and fills every piece with umpteen notes. Hmmph! |
