The North and South box sets are two landmark releases. For the most part, Varese has been generous in releasing these magnificent scores. I mean, think about it. Robert Townsend of Varese could have easily combined the music from Books I & II onto a 3-CD set. There is a lot of repeating material through Conti's themes and variations. But instead he made all 7+ hours available on as many discs. Personally, I think it's wonderful. We can listen to as much or as little as we want, and make our own play lists. I made a 70 minute play list of Book I, but I know if I want I can go back to the box and enjoy more. But what I am getting at is this: North and South Book I is limited to 2500 copies; North and South Book II is limited to 1500 copies. This means that if all of these sell out (which of course they eventually will), then 1000 people will be without a volume 2. Yes, people who really want the companion set will order one, but what about the ones who can't afford to get one right away and maybe miss out? Varese should have pressed an equal amount of Book II to balance out Book I. E-bay isn't too friendly to soundtrack fans. Just a thought. -Rick O. |

I'm with you 100%. I also wondered why Varese released 2500 on Book 1 and only 1500 on Book 2. Maybe Book 1 did'nt sell very well? I have just had a Book 1 & Book 2 DVD marathon over the last 4 days. A trip down memorylane back to when they aired on TV, think it was in 87-88 here in sweden. I never saw Book 3 tho, if my memory serves me right it premiered on VHS-rentals over here. I heard that it sucked, and now I tried to watch it on DVD. I got about an hour into the first episode, and then I could'nt take anymore. All good things about the first two were gone. Not only the actors but the overall quallity. Even Bill Conti had left the ship on this one, and boy does it show... The Main Title to Book 3 is dreadful. Maybe Varese will release Book 3 in 500 copies next time around. Hope NOT. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Book 1 & 2 stands as some of my favourite miniseries along with classics like SHOGUN JACK THE RIPPER (Michael Caine) SALEM'S LOT (David Soul) WISEGUY: SONNY STEELGRAVE AND THE MOB V: THE MINISERIES V: THE FINAL BATTLE (The following V - series Sucked tho) The best theme to North and South is Friends Farewell Book 1 - CD 3 - Track 29 Made me share a tear or two when I heard it, what a great way to end the first miniseries.... Thanks for this release Varese... ![]() The 80's those were the days when they made miracles in Hollywood. |
