I posted this question at the FSM web site. They have a lot of older posters there and some who were involved in the industry in the old days.

Maybe someone there will know.

Columbia Pictures and Columbia Records (Doris Day's label) were not connected in the 1950s, as they are now (both owned by SONY). Columbia Records was owned by CBS at that time.

So Doris Day was not a sure lock.

May Wynn acted and sang the song. Probably the only important movie she appeared in. According to the souvenir program, which I have, Wynn was a singer at NY's Copacabana club when she was signed for Caine Mutiny. Her real name was Donna Lee Hickey. She changed her name to May Wynn after being signed to play the same named chracter in the Caine Mutiny. Probaly a Hollywood first. The song is by Jimmy McHugh and Clarence Gaskill.

I don't know why think you heard Doris Day as the 2 do not sound remotely alike. Also, I hardly believe that Day, an accomplished singer and actress, would have ever agreed to dub someone else's voice without screen credit. In addition there was no "connection" between Columbia Pictures and Columbia Records (Day's recording label).

For some reason I just heard a similarity in the voices. Likely, it was just my brain wanting it to sound that way . Thanks to all for all of the great information about the picture etc. Jose Ferrer's eloquent speech at the end of the film was a classic. Good film.
