Time sure flies. I'm watching another off-the-beaten-trail Hammer effort called "Plague of the Zombies", which sports another cool score from the great James Bernard. They cleaned it up so nicely for the DVD it's all too easy to assume that all the elements MUST have been nicely taken care of for all these years, right? Yeah, I know. ![]() So, since last time I posted on this subject we've had Mike Vickers' "Dracula A.D. 1972"! BSX has had well-publicized customer service issues, but I can't fault their list of soundtrack CDs. If they're listening, more Hammer please? ![]() |

I was a bit of a Hammer obsessive 10 years ago, so I can offer a little background on some of these. The Main Title cue for Plague of the Zombies was released on The Hammer Film Music Collection Volume 2, from GDI Records in 1999. It wasn't as clear sounding as some of the other cues, and I think with Hammer sources really vary from film to film. Another issue is that their co-production deals mean that the films belong to all sorts of studios. For instance the original Dracula and all the sequels from Dracula Has Risen From The Grave onwards belong to Warner, whereas Brides of Dracula (the 2nd movie in the series) is owned by Universal. I've never seen any music from Terror of The Tongs surface but it's still possible it will do so. GDI released a lot of great Hammer albums, but there are still a few gaps that it would be nice to fill, like the aforementioned Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde and Christopher Gunning's score for Hands of The Ripper. |

I've always liked Von Dexter's score for MR. SARDONICUS, and in fact once saw that film in a double feature with TERROR OF THE TONGS. Hard to imagine that these recordings still exist, however. |
