In the "'Baby' --down to 100 copies" thread over at FSM, the thread has become a "I much prefer 'Coma' over 'Baby'" thread. It's exceedingly dumb...and some participants engaged in the discourse are folks I had come to respect over the years. Why is it that whenever a new title is announced and sells out that some people have to down-talk it by stating some preference for another score? I mean, who cares? If "Lonely Are the Brave" ever gets a release, sells out and folks are discussing it, will someone come along and say, "Oh, I much prefer 'Poltergeist' to 'Lonely Are the Brave'. It's more psychological in its approach!" Let's see -- "Coma" a goodish movie based on suspense story by Michael Crichton. "Baby" -- a fantasy about two dinosaurs in the modern world. Scores to be COMPARED? I guess I can understand if someone truly prefers one over the other. That would be the time to be a super-cool fan and offer the unwanted CD to someone who missed out! Or...maybe it's someone who missed out and is now bitter and trying to hide that bitterness with more-than-bitter pissing and moaning. But, jeez! |

Well, let's see Ron...they both are composed by Jerry Goldsmith and they both feature musical instruments. And...hmm...I guess those are the only two places those scores converge. I love the score to COMA. I love the score to BABY. Why choose...enjoy them both! Roger |

I have no doubt that some consider me odd (at best). But I think you're mischaracterizing the FSM thread. One poster listed several Goldsmith scores he preferred to "Baby," including "Coma." Another replied by saying such a preference was inconceivable. Others (including me) chimed in in defense of "Coma." I don't think it came from anybody's need to "down-talk" the new release, or to suggest the films are somehow equivalent but scored differently -- certainly, that was not why I joined in. I firmly believe that one can love "Star Wars" and "Star Trek," the Mets and the Yankees, Coke and Pepsi⦠and even two different Goldsmith scores. I was just surprised that one of the initial posters considered the superiority of "Baby" to "Coma" to be an established fact. Nobody talks about my "Coma" that way! |
