One of the good things, about globalization, is that it has exposed us to film composers from other cultures that might have been off the radar. Rahman, an Indian (Tamil) film composer, is a composer who has gotten my attention and I listen to his themes, frequently, while doing household chores. (Perhaps the meditative qualities, in some of his music, helps me do these mundane tasks more mindfully.
) Apparently he shares an interest in Hollywood neo-Romanticism and early Golden and Silver Age composers. The claim is made that he has revolutionized Indian film music. He is most familiar for his East/West collaboration (How I wish we could universalize such relationships!) with Craig Armstrong on ELIAZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE. Among the overwrought cliches ("Battle") in that score, there are sublime moments (leitmotifs) that capture the essence of grieving, longing and loss. The only other orchestral recording I have, by Rahman, is BETWEEN HEAVEN AND EARTH (Czech Film Orchestra and Chorus).
Are there others, on the forum, who listen to this composer? I would be interested in receiving your recommendations for other recordings worth hearing.
