The booklet, on this release, neglects to mention that Tiomkin co-composed TUNISIAN VICTORY with William Alwyn. Both Clifford McCarty's book, FILM COMPOSERS IN AMERICA, and an on-line data base for Alwyn, give Alwyn co-credit with Tiomkin. The booklet does mention that the film was an American/British co-production, but no mention of the collaborative effort on the score. I don't know if Alwyn contributed original music, or if music was tracked in from DESERT VICTORY (which he had just composed) (and is available on a recent Chandos release). Does anyone have any ideas? When I get some time, I will review DESERT VICTORY (Chandos) and the Tiomkin disc to see if I can discern any Alwyn, along with the quite apparent Tiomkin.
In an ealier post, I made reference to a spectacular chorale in the documentary "War Comes to America", which was part of the WHY WE FIGHT SERIES. This was a mistake. I should have said "Appointment in Tokyo", a different documentary and not part of the WHY WE FIGHT series done by Capra. Tiomkin did compose "War Comes to America." "Tokyo" is a mystery, as far as music goes; I have not been able to find any credits. It still sounds like Waxman to me - and the chorale finale is truly inspiring. I did go back and check my DVDs to make this correction, along with checking a couple of reference sources.
