For the first time in many, many years, the Music Branch had a legitimate glut of exceptionally fine compositions from which to choose this year's nominees for Original Song. All five were certain to be entirely respectable mentions from a host of disparate quarters. And they did that f&@#ing Disney thing again?! I'm not typically one to call names, but they have, in my estimation, finally and irrevocably assumed the mantle of crabby nonagenarians when they can inexplicably avoid every Eddie Vedder achievement from Into the Wild and even bypass Oscar gimmes like the fistful of new material from Hairspray. Hasn't the generation that ignored every contribution from films like Saturday Night Fever long since passed? (Let's be honest -- their kids filled out the ballots in the Flashdance/Footloose era.) Astonishing. I guess I can be thankful that they actually nominated "Falling Slowly" instead of summarily dismissing its film as some sort of immoral depiction of rootless Dublin songbirds. |
