Prefer the Gerhardt and Kojian myself. Of course its wonderful to have the complete score. |

Interesting... I find that the Morgan recording is NOT as detailed as I like... especially in the brass... the trombones have no punch. However, on the Gamba recording I find it far more detailed and punchy which gives the music more power!!! As for performance... I prefer the BBC. Lots of energy that was lacking a bit in the Moscow recording. I also prefer the Chandos record because of its running length. While I do think that The Sea Hawk is a masterpiece and one of the greatest scores ever composed it does loose steam half way through. Gamba's editing eliminates those problems therefore the Chandos record plays a lot better. Anyway, I don't want to take away anything from what Morgan and Stromberg achieved. They gave us the first ever complete recording of the score in wonderful digital sound and I thank them for it with all of my heart. I just find that Chandos did it a little better and more to my liking! But if I want to listen to The Sea Hawk… I will always find the Gerhardt suites first. -Erik- |

I prefer the Morgan/Stromberg re-recording. As Roger said, there's a real sense of joy in the performance... listening to it, I felt the urge to start air-conducting. It's just thrilling, if perhaps (and only perhaps) not as technically polished as the others are. But enthusiasm goes a long way in my book... I can appreciate the others, but there's none I enjoy more than the Morgan/Stromberg. Back at ya later |

As far as recordings of Sea Hawk go the Gerhardt version as far as enthusiasm is concerned is the finest. His recordings were outstanding! Tom |
