The Mephisto Waltz is a masterpiece. Although the film is good, it looks a lot like a TV movie of the week. The score adds many layers to the narrative and makes it so much more complex. Jerry was peerless when it came to writing scary or unsettling music. There's an interview with Laurence Rosenthal in Irwin Bazelon's great book on filmmusic, and Mr. Rosenthal mentions living next to Jerry's house at the time he was composing the score and hearing Jerry Goldsmith banging at the piano and scaring the whole neighborhood. Nice anecdote...
I would love to see Alexandre Desplat tacke a Horror film. The results would surely be very interesting.
