I really enjoyed your latest release of these fine scores. I am positively overwhelmed by "Violent Saturday". This is vintage Friedhofer, and the music has a timelessness about it that "Warlock" lacks, the latter having more of the old school melodic scoring sensabilties. In fact, I think it is the dominent score on the cd!. The recording seems to have held up better with less wow and flutter. As an enthuist of Film Noir, it's a welcome addition to my library. I can see why "Warlock" got the lead on the bill though, with a longer score and better known movie. Thanks for a great release! |

I completely agree. While I respect and like Harline well enough (and would buy more releases of his music), I have a much higher opinion of Friedhofer as a film composer, and tend to like his scores much better. I think Warlock makes for a better cover though. It's cool to see it on the main page right next to the excellent Silverado cover -- westerns past and well, not present but at least not-so-past. ![]() Friedhofer's score to Broken Arrow is one of my favorites so if there are any other Friedhofer westerns waiting to be released like maybe his score to White Feather, his personal favorite of his westerns written 5 years after Broken Arrow and somewhat influenced by it. If it survives it may sound even better than Broken Arrow (which to my ears sounds pretty good for something over half a century old...and good in comparison to, say, The Flame and the Arrow) because it was a CinemaScope film. I say, hoof it on the Friedhofer and some more Harline would be fine. FSM did some great releases including The Bravados, a great stark western score co-written with Alfred Newman, my favorite Golden Age composer, but since they don't have the access to the Fox vaults any more the responsibility rests on the wonderful Intrada fellows...good thing they're stepping up their releases. Bravo! Yavar |

Thanks for the feedback. This was a cool project. Friedhofer was one of the most intellectually stimulating film composers of all time. Something about his unique harmonies and the angular melodies that went over them. VIOLENT SATURDAY was the main reason I wanted to see this one happen since so few Friedhofer scores can be salvaged. Ironically, it's interesting to note how much the opening of Harline's WARLOCK actually sounds like Friedhofer. --Doug |

I was thinking of starting this topic. I am enjoying both scores very much. It's a wonderful CD. I saw Violent Saturday when it first came out. Wonderful work by Joe Sikoryak too. Intrada is lucky to have him, Joe is the best. Thanks for the CD Doug, please try to issue more Fox 1950s CDs .... Peter ![]() |
