Roger, I recommend two novels by the wonderful Octavia E. Butler: KINDRED, a frighteningly disorienting tale about time travel, and FLEDGLING -- an imaginative, highly original twist on vampire lore. (The latter should prove especially interesting after you've read I AM LEGEND.) Both Butler tales contain some violence but are hardly gore-driven; and both are currently in print as trade paperbacks. And if you've never seen the movie, you should get mileage out of Thomas Tryon's THE OTHER. |

"Pet Sematary" is probably the most disturbingly scarey books I've read. I can't describe it without giving away the scares, but a few really disturbing things happen in the middle of the book that would only cross the mind of Stephen King and will stay with you for a long time. "'Salem's Lot" is also really good. -Nate |
