I couldn't agree more. But the Epic release lacks quite a few stand out cues. The opening one for instance: very mystical and noble, ranks among the best cues Jerry ever wrote to open an SF epic. Ditto the friendship music, so haunting and eloquent, particularly during the epilogue when Kirk, Spock and McCoy are talking about death and missing their loved ones: the music is just amazingly beautiful. I'm pretty sure this score would rank as a bona fide classic had the CD been better produced. I can't quite figure out what Jerry Goldsmith was thinking when he chose the program for this one. The cheesy song, I could easily dispense with! NP: Hamlet / As You Like It (William Walton - Chandos) |
