I mention in my corner today about how little my parents played movie music. Maybe yours played soundtracks more often. Feel free to share some of your memories.

Well, my parents did not listen to film music either. But my dad indirectly sparked my interest because he was the one that took me and my siblings to all the movies. This was when there were few neighborhood theatres showing new releases. Going down to Washington, D. C. to RKO Keith's or Warner theatres wa the big event. Seeing the spaghetti westerns with Morricone's music was a thrill. I vividly remember "Where Eagles Dare" on the big screen with Goodwin's heartpounding music. And I was bummed when I saw it a second time at a local theater with almost 30 minutes cut. What a rip-off! Today, the few times I do go to see movies, I still listen for that filmscore, but the experience is not the same.

I remember asking for the soundtrack to Star Wars for Christmas and getting that disco single (I don't think they ever knew the difference). About 10 years later someone gave my dad a dubbed cassette with Man From Snowy River on one side and Somewhere In Time on the other side - he doesn't know film music, but he is a romantic at heart...

Very little, as I recall. Occasionally a film theme would be played (Mom loved that Percy Faith's Greatest Hits lp that had A Summer Place and Moulin Rouge on it); I remember there was an lp that had the theme from On Green Dolphin Street and Stella by Starlight from The Uninvited on it; we had an lp that did have an orchestral recording of 3 Stars will Shine Tonight (Dr Kildare theme), Mom played the 20th Fox soundtrack lp of Sound of Music a lot in 1965-66, I remember Dad loved Zorba the Greek so he played it a lot; The family went to see You Only Live Twice on my sister's birthday in August 1967 (nice of Dad to take Sis, HE was the Ian Fleming/Bond fan!) and we all loved the title song, so the folks bought the lp.... that's about it, though....

I was the mongrel that started dragging in things like Planet of the Apes and ALL the Barry Bond stuff into the house! (Dad heard me listening to Herrmann's main title re-recording of Day Earth/Stood Still in 1974 and asked me who died?)!!!

Never a real film score, just excerpts like one of Mancini's E-Z listening albums with the boppy, fun stuff from Peter Gunn.

One real odd bird was the theme from THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD as played by a South American guitar duo, Los Indios Tabajaras. It was actually quite good.

WHAT A GREAT TOPIC!!!

My reply here also acknowledges Doug's column from last week, which was "Go on... revel your age," as my passion for music was also fired up by my fathers interest, which also included much film music. Some of my earliest and most endearing memories are of my father and I sitting listening to music. Mancini was a big player, as was John Barry. In fact, the one score that I constantly requested my father play over and over again was ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE, which I could (then and now) never get enough of. About the time JAWS came out I was a rambuncious (spoiler alert!) 5 years old and would rush into the family room every time the commercial would come on and I'd here John William's music. "That's great music! Dad can we see that?" Maybe not the best of idea to bring a 5 yr old to see, as to this day sharks are the only thing that scare me (but not the music). Later on my father and I would discover STAR WARS, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS, SUPERMAN and RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, all the time sharing in the experience of appreciating music together. When JEDI came out we would drive around in our VW camper cranking up the volume on the 5 minute title cue, "Return of the Jedi" and air conduct until we were exhausted. Then we'd do it again!!!

In 1983, my father surprised me by taking me to a recording session for the score to THE LAST STAR FIGHTER. This was almost too much for my young mind to handle, but it was an incredible experience to see the orchestra cue up the score. "WOW!!! Craig Safan? Who's that?" (I think I could still ask that question these days - where'd he go?)

Then, at the age of 14, my father died unexpectedly, which, of course was crushing for a young boy. The last soundtrack that my father bought for me was Goldsmith's TWILIGHT ZONE, which we saw in a private screening in San Francisco with Steven Speilberg and a couple other of the films directors. I was all about the music and could careless about the muck-muck of snobbery of who's who when it came to directors or other "talent" - "Um... Mr. Speilberg, you should use Jerry Goldsmith more often, it seems to work for you." (I don't remember what his reply was - drat!)

All these stories aren't about my dad, though, as my mother was also a fan of music. She was definitely more into Barry, such as BORN FREE, SOMEWHERE IN TIME and OUT OF AFRICA. But occasionally I'd find my cassettes missing and in her car. Surprisingly, THE WRATH OF KHAN was a big listen for her and she loved to watch THE JOURNEY OF NATTY GANN to also enjoy hearing the score (ALBUM REALS, PLEASE - Um... it's for my mom.)

Well, that's pretty much my story/(confessional). Now as an adult, every time a raise my arms to conduct a piece of music in the air, my father is right there next to me. Maybe some of you have stories like this?

Regards,

- Oz

HOLY SPIT!!! This happened to me, too.

I'll never forgive my parents for this flub. I'd been asking for the soundtrack since it had been released, and then come christmas morning I saw the familar shape under the tree and could hardly contain myself. Excitment and smiles suddenly turned to a soured, wincing grimice as I oppened to see a candy colored cover with two funked-out space cadets bumping their rumpuses together to the ear grinding sounds of "STAR WAR: AND OTHER GALACTIC FUNK!" What a F*UCKING disappointment!!! In unconscious defiance, I left the thing out over the heater vent that morning in my parent bedroom and it warped violently on one side. My dad was certain that I'd done this on purpose, but I hadn't. I just didn't care to put it where it belonged, out of harms way, and could have just as easily left it out near the wood chipper without any hesitation. "Opps, how'd that fall into the wood chipper?"

Lord, oh lord... it's a good thing that they don't make these highly marketable DISCO VERSIONS anymore. Could you imagine still getting those as gifts from those who KNOW about our addiction, but DON'T UNDERSTAND IT?

Sheeeesh,

- OZ

Fun memories, guys. Addending my previous post, I do remember my folks had the Columbia soundtrack lp of Tiomkin's The Alamo.

Not a one, sadly... my dad liked movies, but I was the one who liked the music. But at least my immediate family never gave me a Billie Holiday CD the way one of my misguided relatives did (nothing against Lady Day, just not my kind of listening)...

Both my parents are music fans, but none of them is particularly interested in soundtracks -- though they usually commend the music I play when they happen to hear it.

I know my father treasures one soundtrack in his old vinyl collection, and that's If.... As for CDs, as Twin Peaks has always been a 'cult' series in our home, the Badalamenti music is also a family treasure adored by all.
I also know that father is fond of the Barry/Bond scores (well, who isn't ?).

Dad: "You and your jungle music..." and "Dead money!"

Mom: "Is that Doctor Zhivago?" and "You won't be able to eat CDs..."

Topic closed for me.
