Post subject:  Great Melodies

Morning all,

I remember Doug Fake doing several column entries regarding this topic, and I thought I'd list my top ten favorite melodies or so as well. Another list, I know, but I'm not fully awake yet... ;)

Unchained Melody from Unchained by Alex North (#7 on Ghost)
Main Theme from The Final Countdown by John Scott (#1 on the OST)
The Last Valley Theme from The Last Valley by John Barry (end of #15 on the Intrada CD)
The Nature Theme from The Lord of the Rings by Howard Shore (mid of #17 on the OST of The Two Towers)
The Trees from Medicine Man by Jerry Goldsmith (#4 on the OST)
Love Theme from War and Peace by Nino Rota (#2 on the 1992 compilation conducted by G. Gelmetti)
Quigley's Theme from Quigley Down Under by Basil Poledouris (#1 on the Intrada CD)
Ashitaka and San from Princess Mononoke by Joe Hisaishi (#8 on the Symphonic Suite CD)
Main Theme from Babylon 5 by Christopher Franke (#7 on Babylon 5 - Volume 2)
Harry's Theme from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by Patrick Doyle (#12 on the OST)

Almost included in the Top Ten: In Rosa Vernat Lilium from The Nativity Story by Mychael Danna (track #22 on the OST)

And unsurpassed: The Force Theme from The Star Wars Hexalogy by John Williams (pick one...)

And there are so many, many more...but the ones listed above are very close to the top of the list. :)

"Unchained" film is unreleased, and I recall reading the masters were gone/destroyed to that score. Anyone ever seen the film and can comment if the rest of the score it as good as that piece used in "Ghost".

And how nice would it have been is North had scored "ghost", eh?

North might as well have scored Ghost. It's what the membership was voting for when they gave Maurice Jarre the nod.

Just listening to AMAZING GRACE by David Arnold and I'd say that it certainly deserves to be mention in this topic as well... Main theme is simply wonderful and goes throughout the whole score since its first full statement in God and Nature performed by solo piano and harp with barely hearable choir in the background before it is joined by string section...
IMO the whole score is just brilliant and with Philippe Rombi's ANGEL and Talgorn's MOLIERE it's the best thematic/symphonic score of 2007 so far...[/b]
