Doug, you said a mouthful. And it's the first TRUE soundtrack of a Mancini 60s score I've heard apart from the film. Great stuff. Wonderful stuff. Moody and evocative stuff. Watched the movie this evening (ordered it the same day I ordered the FSM CD). TREMENDOUS performance by Audrey Hepburn. Interesting standout performances by Arkin and Crenna. Hell, even the little girl is wonderful. SPOILERS...STOP! If you HAVEN'T Seen the FILM!!!!! And then there's Sam. Efrem Zimbalist Jr. does a great "Sam." But does anyone else yell at the screen at the very end: "It's not about YOU! Why the hell shoud she come to YOU?" as he stands there saying, "I'm over here!"???? I understand why the line is there...it's the cuff-under-the-chin attaboy that says, "You almost didn't make it, but now that you did, climb over all the stuff in your way and find ME." It was terrific in the 60s. Today, it's just plain selfish and egotistical, IMO. |

Oh, crap! I "meant" D-R-A-M-A-T-I-C score. Certainly I have all those others...Mr. Hobbs, Silver Streak, Bachelor in Paradise...and I love 'em. And, yes, I know there are several fine cues, worthy of being considered among the best of Mancini's dramatic work, among them. But I was so totally in a frame of mind re: "Charade", "Breakfast at Tiffany's", "Hatari" and "Two for the Road' as being re-dos of scores that are much better in the films than on the LPs/CDs that I inadvertently appeared to be dissing some fine scores already on CD. Forgive me??? |
