Me too. But if I had to choose one or the other, I wouldn't hesitate in picking North and South. Yavar |

I saw THE RIGHT STUFF only once in '83. But ever since the Oscars telecast the following year, I've figured it was primarily Director Philip Kaufman's use of Mancini's "Theme from THE WHITE DAWN" (also directed by Kaufman) behind John Glenn's orbiting the Earth which won Conti the Best Original Score award that, by merits, should have gone to one of my most favorite scores in film history -- Goldsmith's UNDER FIRE. That, and the likelihood that probably as few Academy voters even saw UNDER FIRE as saw THE WHITE DAWN nine years earlier. |

Oh, no question "Under Fire" MUCH cooler - but there's lots of fun "Right Stuff" stuff that didn't end up on the Varese CD. The music for the Russian sequences always gives me chills, for example. That IS Conti, right? If it's part of Kaufman's temp track, someone please feel free to chime in and let me know. ![]() |

I'm a fan of the film, and reading about all the temp-tracking has been fascinating. I was aware much of Conti's score had been replaced but I wasn't aware of the extent. Other than "The White Dawn", Debussy's "Clair de lune", and obvious lifts from Holst's "The Planets", what else is should I be listening for (not including the source music)? Did Conti write original music for these scenes? |
