I understand and share your love for Horner's Troy, Doug, now that I have heard it (amazon.fr had it half price, along with several other interesting scores, which I also got, filling some holes in my film music culture & collection: Black Rain, Black Book, The Mission, More Music From Gladiator, Braveheart, The Usual Suspects, The Queen).

I am playing for the second time right now, and will surely play it a third time before seeing the movie this evening-- it happens to be broadcast.
From yesterday's first play, I remember liking tracks 4, 7 or 8, and 11 particularly.
Pretty good song, too.

Horner's Troy is quite effective and exciting; I don't think many people dispute that. It just helps to appreciate it if you've never heard another James Horner score or more importantly Shostakovich's 5th Symphony (or Rachmaninov's 1st, for that matter...or much Prokofiev).

The level to which Horner goes in the area he's most criticized for is almost that of self parody in this score. As long as the fans of the music recognize that, I certainly don't think they deserve to be criticized for enjoying the music!
