Toru Takemitsu's Kwaidan. He uses the (unacompanied) sounds of wood being split apart in one vignette, and electronically-processed stings in another. The only real melody in the score comes from a Japanese biwa and vocals in the "Hochi The Earless" episode (which is still far-removed from western ideas of musical tradition). I'm hard-pressed to think of a better example...except maybe Takemitsu's Woman in the Dunes. |
