Christopher Palmer wrote that Dimitri Tiomkin's music had the effect of polarizing people's opinions: people loved it or REALLY didn't love it. My experience of modern (post 1990) film music and its criticism is limited, so I'm only inclined to guess that Danny Elfman is the new Tiomkin (in regards to the aspect I name above) since I have one of the opinions above and have heard only the other opinion stated. Any other nominees? |

I'd say James Horner is probably the most polarizing composer out there today. People either tend to praise everything he does or hate nearly all of his music. I would give the label to Hans Zimmer, but almost everyone who loves or hates Zimmer has at least a couple of scores they make an exception for. I don't think Elfman has enough critics to put him in the same position as Tiomkin. Back at ya later |
