Too many excellent choices, but if I had to, I would choose: "Mission: Impossible" "Bullitt" "Cincinatti Kid" (just for the Ray Charles vocal) "The Competition" Also really like his work as arranger with Cal Tjader (Seven Shades Of Jade). Really cool arrangements and one or two original compositions. I got to see Lalo perform once at a concert, including displaying his jazz chops on the piano. What I find sometimes disconcerting is that his piano playing, which is intense and in-you-face style, with big bunches of notes, does not necessarily match his composing and arranging, which is, I think at it best, kind of laid back and minimal. Maybe Laid back is not the right word, but Schifrin, in his early scores in the 1960's was definitely in the less is more style of Goldsmith or Mancini. |

I, unfortunately, missed the Schifrin bandwagon. I've always found his Less-is-more style to be more less-is-less. Schifrin was ascending in the 60s at a time when I was discovering/uncovering the masterworks of Rozsa, Newman, Waxman, Tiomkin, Herrmann, Bernsteing. Schifrin didn't compare for me. Still doesn't, sorry to say. I know many folks love his work. |

I like his Exorcist composition. Spooky ! He also wrote Gillespiana for Dizzy, as Dizzy thought he was a rip roaring composer. If you want to hear him playing jazz check out the recording at the Museum of Modern Art with Dizzy, Wright and Lampkin, electric. |
