...you might also like BODY AND SOUL. Boy was it exciting to hear a Hugo Friedhofer work I've never heard before!
I just borrowed it from the library and was expecting to hear way too much of John Green's tune and too little of Hugo Friedhofer. I found that while there were interpolations of Green, there was plenty of Friedhofer, and some of the writing resembled the romantic stuff he wrote for BEST YEARS.
The Green tune popped up a little more often than I cared for personally, but it was nice to hear the the few times that Friedhofer got to re-harmonize it in his own style. I do like the song; it just jumped out at me every time it was brought up in the music and my attention was jolted away from the story as a result.
(Trivia: in an interview with David Raksin, Friedhofer said that Jimmy Van Heusen like so well the way Friedhofer had re-harmonized the tune "This Earth is Mine" for the underscoring of picture of the same name, that Van Heusen changed the harmony in the printed sheet music to Friedhofer's. I think that's a REAL compliment.)
I was also going to just listen to the audio on remote speakers and ignore the video, but found that the D.P. was the incredible James Wong Howe, so I just had to watch, and he did NOT disappoint.
Anybody know why the tune was used in the film? (I don't think it was written for the film)
